Description

Canopy is a structure that combines computer simulation and architecture. This shading structure has an auxetic covering, i.e. it has the ability to extend in the direction perpendicular to the traction force. It is one of the first architectural achievements in the world based on this principle, which is already used, for example, in the manufacture of stents for medical use. The Geometric Computation Laboratory of EPFL (Prof. Mark Pauly) developed the algorithms that allowed the custom fabrication of the aluminum tiles composing this canopy, each of them being unique. Their design allows to reduce the quantity of materials used to obtain a maximum shading, evoking that of a tree with its play of light. More information on canopy.epfl.ch
